Yellowbird Consignment Company - "Shop Cheep!"

When I moved to Florida I brought with me all the clothes we owned. This included all kinds of winter clothes, clothes the kids were outgrowing and even maternity clothes. I didn’t want to just toss these clothes as some were in perfect condition.

Driving through our neighborhood one day I noticed a cute building with signage stating it was Yellowbird Consignment Company . As soon as I got home I called and found out that they would take the kid’s and women’s clothes as well as shoes and also the maternity clothes!

Upon entering Yellowbird you find they are so much more than just a consignment shop!

They have clothes and shoes from casual to formal. Purses, bags and scarves as well! In the kids section they have clothing, shoes and toys. They also have lots of new jewelry, soaps, artwork, and much more from artists who consign their work there as well.

The store was opened in May 2012 and is owned by Cheri Kaczmarek. Cheri, as well as Manager Katy Ferguson make every customer feel at home. They are friendly and always willing to help you out. From my very first visit these two have made me feel like a friend. They offer topnotch assistance and will help you with your shopping. I have gone to the store a few times not really looking for anything in particular, but they have aided me in finding something great while there.

Their consignment contract and guidelines are very easy to follow. You can find all the information you need about consigning here.

What is also great about Yellowbird is that some of their items can be found in an online shop! Although not as extensive as the in shop experience, you can find many great items there!

Also be sure to check out their Facebook Page for more information and pictures!

Estate Sale Finds = Furnishing the Florida Home

When we relocated to Florida, we brought very minimal furniture with us. We didn't want to take things that would take up too much space on a moving truck and we weren't sure if we were going to settle in ok at our new location.

Along with my quit being sad about moving plan for 2014, I thought it was time we decorated and furnished up the house!

This weekend we just happened to come upon an estate sale close to our house. The sale was almost over, but there were lots of great finds.

We immediately were attracted to this china buffet. So beautiful, and well taken care of. Expecting a high price we were surprised to find it very reasonably priced!

The woman running the sale asked if we would be interested in the dining table and chairs as well. We did need new chairs, so we asked about a package deal. She tallied up the asking prices and told us to make an offer.

We did, expecting a no, but she accepted our offer! So now we are owners of a beautiful dining set at a wonderful low price!

Have you ever come across a great deal at an estate sale or garage sale you couldn't pass up?

Date Night #1 of 2014

The hubby and I finally had our first date of 2014. Our son's school occasionally has nights out for the kids and their siblings can go too. Since we are already familiar with the teachers, we feel comfortable having them watch the kids for a few hours.

Marc and I decided to try a new to us restaurant in Sanford, as we had a certificate from Restaurant.com. Formerly known as Wolfys, Nemo's Bar and Grill is located overlooking Lake Monroe. The atmosphere was casual with music playing and multiple TVs airing different programs.

The waitstaff was friendly and happy to assist us with the menu and bar choices. Our food came out quickly and was delicious. The best deep fried pickles I've ever had!

With a large variety on the menu and a full bar, I think we will make another date night at Nemo's.

*Opinions are solely my own. I did not receive any incentives for this review. I purchased the restaurant.com certificate.

Fruit and Veggie Co-Op

A great thing about moving to Florida is all the wonderful fresh produce. The cost is much more budget friendly than back in PA and we've found that helpful with our plans to eat better.

We were also excited to find a fruit and veggie co-op in the area. Every other week we pay $50 for a mixed box of organic goodies! We don't know what we are getting until that week and it's always a great surprise!

The co-op has exposed us to many fruits and veggies we may not have tried otherwise, and some we never even heard of! Patty pan squash, Romensco cauliflower and tangelos are just an example!

My kids now love tri-colored carrots and usually eat them up the same day we get them. We are all loving the better taste of the organic produce and are eating more because of it!

The fruit and veggie co-op has also inspired us to look into growing our own produce, and we hope to start on that soon!

We Spent Months Without Going On Dates

My husband and I have now been in Florida together for a year and 2 months. During this time we've gone on maybe 3 dates! Its tough going from always having a ton of family around and never needing to look to far for a sitter to not knowing anyone and not knowing where to start to find one!

When I first joined my husband in Florida we did interview a sitter that Marc found through a co-worker. She came to the house, met the kids, and was wonderful. But, every time we contacted her she wasn't available to sit! So we gave up. The times that we did have a sitter were when family visited, and when my son's school had a kids night out.

We now feel ready to try again. I asked for help on a mom's page I found on Facebook. These ladies have helped me with many issues since moving to Florida including things to do in the area, spider identification and yard help. I am positive that they can help us find a sitter we can trust and have already given us a few leads.

I look forward to being able to spend some date nights with Marc. We've had a tough year and it's time we get to go out and enjoy our new location!

The Ease of Bromeliads

When we first moved to Florida I had no idea what a Bromeliad (bro mele ad) was. They are tropical plants which are very easy to grow. Bromeliads are epiphytic plants and pull water and moisture from the air. They do not collect water from the soil.

These are my very own bromeliads. The flowering one was only $3.00! These plants are very budget friendly and propagate very quickly.

This arrangement was made from smaller plants that propagated off ones I purchased a few months ago. I love how they look in this multilayered pot!

These 2 pots hold a variety of bromeliads, all which need very little watering and sunlight. I keep these all on the porch and this is the most light they get on an average day.

Did you know that a pineapple is a bromeliad? Once you cut the top off your pineapple, you can twist off the leaves, remove some of the smaller leaves and you will reveal roots! You can then plant the leaves to grow a whole new pineapple plant. I read that it takes well over a year, and this is my first plant, and I am looking forward to the whole process of growing my own!!

One fun thing about having plants in Florida is that you never know who you might meet inside your plants! This little frog was just hanging out, hiding from the sun!

This little anole thought that I didn't see him. All these critters provide entertainment while caring for these plants.

Thanksgiving Done Untraditionally

My Thanksgiving post is a day late because yesterday was a tough day. Although it was our second Thanksgiving away from the Burgh, it was the first without my oldest son. He is an adult, and when we relocated, he stayed behind. Days are getting a little easier being away from him and our other family, but Holidays and special occasions are still difficult.

My husband, our younger son and daughter and I had a quiet day at home. We originally had reservations for Thanksgiving dinner, but the boy was sick and we stayed in. We didn't have any of the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal and ended up ordering Denny's. Was a nice impromptu meal.

I have many things to be thankful for. I have a wonderful husband who works hard to provide for our family. I have 3 healthy children. I have many family members and friends who keep me going despite the miles and miles between us. And, even though it displaced us from all we knew, I am thankful for our move as it has provided us with opportunities, events and experiences we wouldn't have had otherwise!

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

1 Year Anniversary of Our Big Move

One year ago today I made the biggest move of my life. I, along with my two younger children, left Pittsburgh and moved to Florida. My husband had already been living there for 4 months as he moved before us for the new job he accepted at a college.

Him accepting the job and us realizing we were leaving all our family and friends, and the city we knew so well, was very difficult. One of our children would not be moving with us as he was in college and that made things even harder.

One year later and I can say I still get homesick. I missed the smell of fall and the brisk air. I miss being familiar with all my surroundings. I miss my family and my son most of all.

I'm starting to settle in more. I'm talking to my neighbors. Met a few local moms. I'm taking walks and learning the area. But I will always be a Burgh girl.

My First 5K

One accomplishment I wanted to make this year was participating in a 5K. I made that happen today. I walked, but finished. I was far from first, but not last. I beat my own expectations which was making it at under an hour. Now I have set my beginning pace and time and want to better it next time.

One thing that is definitely nice being a Yinzer in Florida and starting to walk/run is all these flat roads and trails and nice weather! No slippy streets! No snow! And no sidewalk potholes either!

My participation today benefitted Peace, Love, Cure for Diabetes. A cause close to my heart.

Let me introduce myself

I lived in Pittsburgh, PA for 40 years of my life, 30 of those spent living in the same house I grew up in.   I knew the areas, the sports teams, and how to talk n'at. Had jobs in Oakland and Dahntahn and drank pop and ate chipped ham sammitches. My family is almost all in Pittsburgh and I was comfortable in my surroundings.

Then, in May of 2012 my Husband Marc was offered a job in Central Florida! Talk about a major life change! It took a lot of thinking and brainstorming, but we made the move.

My name is Jocelyn and I'd like you to follow my blog to hear about how moving changed our lives, and how we continue to change. When I post I may not have things in chronological order, they may just be what I want to share that day.

I'll be sharing things about our lives, sales we may come across, products I try, crafts, and hey, maybe even the weather! I'd like this to become a place that you too could share these things, and maybe even just what you feel that day.

I look forward to "meeting" you!
